It is very rare to find someone who hasn’t been on a Weight Loss Diet and yet as a country we have one of the largest populations that are suffering from overweight and obesity and everything else that comes with it !
Have you ever wondered why this happens or why weight loss diets fail? Maybe this is because we always think of a diet with an expiration date and that is the problem right there!
Weight loss is a complex issue because weight gain is a result of multiple factors including genetics, environment, hormones ,lifestyle, behaviour ,food preferences and physical activity.Hence weight loss or rather weight maintenance requires a multifaceted approach. It is an on going journey which should include developing healthy habits and inculcating lifestyle and behavioural changes. Weight loss begins with a change in mindset.
It is also important for us to understand the ‘why’ of weight loss. Determining the underlying reason for weight-loss will help us stay motivated and consistent. Do you want to lose weight to prevent a disease? to get better control of a medical condition? do you want to lose weight to get fitter and more energetic ? or is it merely because you want to see a certain number on the scale or fit into a certain mould?
Understanding your reason for weight loss not only helps you stay consistent but is also critical in streamlining your approach. Determine a good reason for weight loss and you are on the right track.
Next is to understand ‘your’ reason for weight gain , which will never be singular but a combination of factors that could range from dietary behaviours, hormones, physical inactivity and medications to list a few. This will further refine your weight loss approach and help you identify the health professionals that you will need to assist you in your weight loss journey.
You will soon realise that your body, your health issues and your reasons are unique. Which is why your weight loss journey is unique to you, your habits, your lifestyle and that there is no one size fits all approach.
Trying to follow your neighbours’ or friends’ diet plan is the first step to failure and will leave you frustrated and disappointed. Remember that there are no quick - fixes and weight loss is a journey that you embark on to reach a healthier , happier and fitter you !
